  • Where does Appendix Cancer Spread?

  • 22 December, 2023

Appendiceal cancer has the potential to spread through lymph nodes, and nearby organs when the appendix ruptures.

Appendix cancer occurs when cells within the appendix undergo uncontrolled division, resulting in cancer. The appendix is a small pouch-like structure attached to the large intestine. Its role is unclear and is often considered vestigial (useless)

The type of appendiceal cancer that develops depends on the specific cells affected. For instance, adenocarcinoma arises when mucin-producing cells become cancerous, while neuroendocrine tumors stem from enterochromaffin cells.

Cancer's spread occurs in different ways. In the case of adenocarcinoma, where mucin-producing cells are involved, an accumulation of mucin within the appendix can lead to the rupture of the appendix, which then allows the cancer to spread to nearby areas in the abdomen. This condition is called pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), where mucin is spread throughout the abdomen. Mucin, a glycosylated protein produced by epithelial cells, accumulates due to the uncontrolled division of cells seen in adenocarcinoma. This excess mucin can contribute to the rupture of the appendix.

The mechanism of rupture involves various layers of the appendix's wall, including the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria, and serosa. Once the tumor outgrows the confines of the appendix, it can invade nearby organs such as the colon or rectum, or even affect the visceral peritoneum – the lining of the abdominal cavity.

The impact of the spread of appendix cancer varies based on the affected organs. After it has spread, individuals might experience symptoms like abdominal pain and bloating. These symptoms highlight the disruption caused by the spread of cancer to surrounding areas and its effects on the body's normal functions.
